In Memoriam: Pope Francis (1936–2025)

We join the global community in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he became the first Jesuit and the first Latin American pope, leading the Catholic Church from 2013 until his death.

Pope Francis was renowned for his humility, compassion, and commitment to social justice. He championed the causes of the marginalized, advocated for environmental stewardship, and sought to modernize the Church’s approach to contemporary issues. His leadership emphasized inclusivity, mercy, and a deep concern for the poor and oppressed.

His final public appearance was during the Easter Sunday Mass, where he delivered his Urbi et Orbi blessing to thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square. He passed away peacefully the following morning at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.

Pope Francis’s legacy will endure as a testament to his unwavering dedication to faith, humility, and the betterment of humanity.
